Logo
Your logo should be on the page. If you do not have one a small graphic can be used to give the page a bit of color. Any heavy loading graphics such as pictures should be avoided.

Know Your Audience
Pictures slow down loading of pages. People in areas of high speed internet will not have any difficulty opening pages containing high resolution pictures. However, people without high speed internet may not be able to open your page at all.
It is important to consider your target audience when making a decision regarding pictures.

Graphics
Graphics and colors should compliment your business. A dog walker would not use the scales of justice or a lawyer would not use a paint can. An accountant would not use a flower and a florist would not use a cup of coffee.
"Graphics are visual elements often used to point readers and viewers to particular information. They are also used to supplement text in an effort to aid readers in their understanding of a particular concept or make the concept more clear or interesting." Wikipedia - Uses
Your page should "feel" right when it opens for your customer.
